Granada Train Station
2025
Gilbartolome Architects have participated in the competition for the expansion and redevelopment of Granada’s railway station, as well as redesigning the railway integration within the urban fabric. The new station will act as a new hub for high-speed, bus, bike and short and long-distance trains, improving connection between existing districts and the university.
The project has a unique approach to the trend of redevelopment of rail lines within cities. Using underpasses and wide overpasses, the aim is to improve upon the curren solution and redifine the interaction with and across the railway. There is an extensive aspect of urban development, with multiple points of intervention along the railway.
Along this railway, we propose the creation of a green line, a lineal park, that mediates the interaction with the infraestructure, and creating a new spirit to the entryway into granada. Granada’s new green line is conceived as green infrastructure, vital for the sowing of the urban mesh of the city, repairing the historic discontinuity generated by the railway. The design prioritizes landscape integration with a strategy of low visual impact actions and natural sound barriers, attempting to reduce the harsh barriers and transitions.
The main concept of this design was the circular flow of traffic. The limitend acces from Granada's higway has echoed into several congested streets, such as Severo Ochoa, near the station. The circular flow integrates new pedestrian lines and crossings to redistribute traffic.
The new station itself is the culmen of these design philosophies, integrating within a simple inner circulation, the cities unique sightlines of Sierra Nevada and Alhambra, prioritizing urban experience and integration.
