Gadeokdo Busan Airport Terminal

2024

Gilbartolome Architects have participated in an international competition for the development of a 23 Million PAXinternational terminal in Busan, South Korea. The terminal was intended to expand the city's travel capacity, in preparation for the World Expo in 2030.

The project included Masterplanning of thepeninsula, the development of ancillary facilities and the airside platform.

The main concept of the proposal has been to develop an open space, with a homogenous distribution of natural light inside a curved envelope. This inside space has a very special ceiling, made of LED screens and mirrors, that create a full media ceiling, able to work as an instrument for the functionality of the terminal and to enhance the experience of the user. The functional approach for the terminal is centered around a main commercial plaza, that holds entertainment and retail opportunities, where passengers will spend most of their stay, using the screens in the landscape and clear sight-lines to make clear cues of when to embark and direct passengers efficiently towards their gates. This centers the airport experience, creating a living urban space within the structure.
