Expansion Dammam International Airport
2024-2025
The project developed by GilBartolomé Architects has consisted on the development of a Masterplan and a Concept Design for the Building Terminal for the expansion of Dammam airport in Saudi Arabia to cater for 32,2 Million Passengers in 2053.
Several options were presented to the client and an option based on the retrofitting of the existing terminal, including the incorporation of an unused area of the building, and the expansion of the existing piers has beed developed. An important aspect of the design has been to bring the terminal to the 21th Century in terms of quality, but using opportunistically the positive values of the materials, construction elements, services and structures of the existing terminal, to create positive value from both the past and the present. The retrofitting of the existing terminal has proved to be successful both in functional and aesthetic terms.
The development of the terminal can also be designed with flexibility, arranging it in different phases irrespectively of the moment in which the level of demand takes place. The size and position of unused area of the terminal allows for flexibility and maintaining the operability of the existing terminal during construction.
